Yellow Wing Productions is an award-winning production company specializing in documentaries. We're committed to preserving stories and inspiring change with films that educate, heal, and transform both individuals and communities. Yellow Wing Productions makes an active effort to create employment opportunities and creative outlets for women and minorities. Only 4% of films are directed by women (2% by non-white women). We want to right this wrong. All of our films are produced, edited, and directed by women.
Yellow Wing’s first feature film, FISH OUT OF WATER, directed by Ky Dickens, explores the seven Bible passages notoriously used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination. The film has screened in hundreds of universities and churches, and has been translated into Russian, Spanish, Italian, and French Creole. It is hailed by both LGBTQ activists and Protestant clergy as one of the most reconciling films of the past decade. FISH OUT OF WATER won the prize for Best Documentary at the Reeling International Film Festival, the prize for Best Documentary at the Show Me Social Justice International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Louisville LGBT Film Festival, and won the Audience Award Runner Up at the Tall Grass Film Festival. It was a showcase film at the Rhode Island International Film festival and was the runner up for the After Ellen Visibility Prize for "Best Festival Release with a Lesbian Character" in 2009. Golden Globe nominated Kaki King created the original score for FISH OUT OF WATER. The film, distributed in North America by FIRST RUN FEATURES, can be found on Netflix, Amazon, Borders, and iTunes. Internationally, the film is distributed on television OTPL Worldwide and Sideways Films.
SOLE SURVIVOR, Yellow Wing’s second feature film, profiles four people who were the only survivors of otherwise fatal plane crashes. Eschewing sensationalism, SOLE SURVIVOR puts a face on survivor’s guilt and offers an in-depth look at the crippling impact of PTSD. SOLE SURVIVOR was acquired by CNN FILMS for theatrical and broadcast distribution. The film premiered on the network in January 2014 to critical acclaim and won “Best of Fest” at DocUtah and “Best Feature Film” at the Midwest Film Festival. SOLE SURVIVOR has been covered on news outlets LA Times, USA Today, The Today Show, and The View.
ZERO WEEKS, is Yellow Wing Production’s current feature film. The feature-length documentary is about the maternity leave crisis in America. The film profiles women from around the world, revealing the stark disparity and unnecessary stress faced by American families. The film is currently in production, set to be released in 2016. Yellow Wing’s Creative Director, Ky Dickens, was also tapped to direct VOTE NAKED ILLINOIS, a get-out the vote campaign, conceived of by Equality Illinois, Kevin Hauswirth, and Ky Dickens. It might have had the single largest media impact on voter turnout in Illinois history. This highly captivating get-out-the-vote commercial was discussed as the "video of the day" on Fox News’ The O'Reilly Factor. The commercial, sponsored by Rock The Vote, Roosevelt University, and Equality Illinois inspired over 70,000 absentee ballots through its mail-in program.
